Somehow, few things can be as rattling as discovering that there is something wrong with the plumbing in your home. This is because most people are ill-equipped to deal with such problems. Few people actually understand the water or drainage system in their home which can make a solution seem rather improbable. Now, just because you can’t fix the problem at hand yourself doesn’t mean that you can’t be useful. Here is what you need to do in the case of an emergency:

Turn Off the Main Water Supply

One of the first things that you should familiarise yourself with, in your home is where the main water supply valve is. This is usually placed near your water meter and shouldn’t be too difficult to locate. Now, if there is a leak, you can try turning off the main fixture but this might not be enough. Typically, regardless of the problem, it is a good idea to turn off the main water supply. This will stop the issue in its tracks for now and at the very least, you may be able to prevent further damage.

Prevent Water from Flowing

The second thing on your agenda is to prevent water from escaping the flooded area. If there are any drains nearby, your first act should be to dispel the water towards this. You can use a mop or a floor squeegee to direct the water. You can also try to bring the water level down by scooping it out with containers. If the water is on a flat, level surface, your best bet might be to pile towels and rags on the floor so that it will not be able to spread. You should be careful as the floor will be wet and slippery, making it easy for you to fall.

Call a Reliable Plumber

You should always have a good, reliable plumber that you can call, like the ones from Urban Tide Plumbing. These individuals should be well experienced and have tools on hand to deal with a large number of plumbing issues. You should consider a service that is located relatively close to you so that they can get to your home faster. Now, when you are calling your plumber, it can be helpful to describe the situation to them a little, even if you don’t know what the original problem is. This can help them to prepare by bringing the necessary tools.

Try to Salvage Objects

In the area that is flooded, there are some items or objects that are going to get damaged faster than others. These are typically electronics and objects that are made from absorptive materials. Now, with electronic items, it is best to be careful. For instance, if they are plugged in, you should avoid the area, particularly if you are not sure if water has reached plug points. If there aren’t any electronics, though, you should pick up any smaller items that can be moved out of the flooded space.

This concludes how you should react in a plumbing emergency so that you can minimise damage and stop the problem quickly.
